Six Patriots Score In Wootton Victory
Six different Patriots scored goals during the No. 10 Wootton girls soccer team’s 6-0 victory over No. 7 Paint Branch during the opening round of the state playoffs.

Allison Yeager, Liz Inserra, Becca Kelly, Nicole Kopsidas, Toni Urovsky and Abbey Engleman each scored for the Patriots. Wootton defeated Paint Branch 6-0 during a regular season meeting on Sept. 30.

"Paint Branch is a really talented team and we wanted to jump on them early because we knew if we did not, the longer the game went on, the more dangerous they would become," Wootton head coach Keith Yanity said in an e-mail.

Wootton took on No. 2 Bethesda-Chevy Chase on Tuesday. Results were not available as of press time.

Yeager entered Tuesday’s action as the Patriots’ leading scorer with 17 goals and eight assists. Kelly was the team’s second-leading scorer with seven goals.

Morrison’s Goal in OT Lifts Whitman
The No. 13 Whitman girls soccer team upset No. 4 Gaithersburg 1-0 in overtime on Friday during the opening round of the state playoffs.

Tessa Morrison scored the game’s lone goal five minutes into overtime off a cross from Kim Anderson.

Whitman won the game without standout midfielder Kat Barth, who is out indefinitely with a foot injury.

Whitman faced No. 12 Magruder on Tuesday. Results were not available as of press time.

Wootton Boys Soccer Upset by Whitman
The 7-3-3 Wootton boys soccer team entered the 4A West state tournament bracket as the No. 5 seed, fell to No. 12 Whitman, 2-0, in the opening round.

"We could have gone a lot farther this season," Wootton senior midfielder Stephen Ho said. "We had a lot of talent and it was disappointing to lose in the first round. Whitman was probably the toughest first opponent we could have played and if we got past them, I think we had a good shot at the regional title."

Contrary to Whitman’s offense, the Patriots’ attack was unable to capitalize on its scoring chances.

"We couldn't get much going offensively and they were more athletic than us," Wootton senior midfielder Jeff Robinson said. "When we tried to push up and get offense going, they counter attacked quickly and got to the goal. They played a more possession game than us and kept the ball, which got us frustrated and we didn't play well."

Wootton will graduate much of this season’s starting nucleus. Juniors Hugo Coimbra, Antoine Plante, Max Goldschein, and sophomore Danny Weinstein are expected to fill the void left by the graduating seniors.

"The underclassmen had a great year and gained experience which should help them have a great year next season," Ho said. "It's sad to lose first round in my senior year, but I’ll remember the whole entire season and playing with my teammates."

The early playoff exit does not overshadow a regular season full of come-from-behind victories and late game heroics.

"It was fun while it lasted," Robinson said. "We showed our true talent in some games and beat some good teams, and we showed our heart with all of our late wins."
